I’ve looked at thousands of LinkedIn profiles. Most of them have the same problems. These mistakes will cost you interviews – but they’re easy to fix.
Mistake 1: No photo or a bad one
Profiles without photos get 21 times fewer views. But a bad photo might be worse. Blurry pictures, cropped party photos, sunglasses, or photos from 10 years ago – all of these hurt you. Get a proper headshot. It doesn’t have to be expensive.
Mistake 2: A boring headline
“Seeking New Opportunities” tells me nothing. Your headline should show what you do and why you’re good at it. You have 220 characters. Use them.
Mistake 3: Empty summary
Your summary is your chance to tell your story. Leaving it blank is like going to an interview and saying nothing. About 40% of profiles have no summary. Don’t be one of them.
Mistake 4: Listing job duties instead of results
“Responsible for managing a team” – so what? “Grew team from 3 to 15 while increasing revenue by 200%” – now I’m interested. Always show the result.
Mistake 5: No recommendations
Recommendations prove that other people think you’re good at what you do. Having none makes me wonder why. Ask former colleagues or managers. Most people will say yes if you ask nicely.
Fix these five things and you’ll be ahead of 80% of job seekers on LinkedIn.
