"How to Write a Resume That Gets Interviews in Australia"

📅 6 Jan 2026 ⏱ 4 min read

Most resumes don’t get read. They get scanned for about six seconds, then discarded.

After 15 years in recruitment, I’ve seen thousands of resumes. The ones that get interviews aren’t necessarily from the most qualified candidates – they’re from candidates who know how to present themselves on paper.

Here’s what actually works in the Australian job market.

The 6-Second Test

Recruiters and hiring managers are busy. Your resume needs to pass a quick visual scan before anyone reads the detail.

In those first six seconds, they’re looking for:

If your resume is cluttered, hard to read, or doesn’t immediately signal relevance – it’s gone.

What Australian Employers Actually Want to See

1. A Strong Professional Summary

Skip the “objective statement” – nobody cares what you want. Lead with 2-3 sentences about what you offer: your experience level, your specialty, and what you’re known for.

Example: “Operations Manager with 8 years in logistics and supply chain across FMCG and retail. Known for reducing costs without compromising service levels.”

2. Achievements, Not Just Responsibilities

Anyone can list job duties. What did you actually accomplish?

Weak: “Responsible for managing a sales team.” Strong: “Managed a team of 6 sales reps, grew territory revenue from $1.2M to $1.8M in 18 months.”

Numbers, percentages, dollar figures – these catch attention.

3. Keywords From the Job Ad

Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes before a human sees them. If your resume doesn’t include the right keywords, it gets rejected automatically.

Read the job ad carefully. Mirror the language they use. If they say “stakeholder engagement,” don’t just write “worked with people.”

4. Clean, Simple Formatting

Fancy templates with columns, graphics, and icons often break ATS systems. Stick with:

5. Reverse Chronological Order

List your most recent role first. Australian employers expect this format – don’t get creative with the structure.

Common Mistakes That Kill Your Chances

Too long: Two pages maximum. If you’re early career, one page is fine.

No tailoring: A generic resume sent to 50 jobs will underperform a tailored resume sent to 10. Adjust your summary and keywords for each application.

Typos and errors: One spelling mistake can end your chances. Proofread, then get someone else to proofread.

Including irrelevant information: Your age, marital status, photo, or hobbies rarely help. Focus on professional qualifications.

Burying the good stuff: Your most impressive achievements should be easy to find, not hidden in paragraph three of your second role.

A Simple Resume Structure That Works

  1. Contact Details – Name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL, location (suburb and state, no full address)
  2. Professional Summary – 2-3 sentences on who you are and what you bring
  3. Key Skills – 6-8 bullet points of relevant skills and capabilities
  4. Work Experience – Each role should have 3-5 bullet points focused on achievements
  5. Education & Certifications – Degrees, diplomas, relevant training
  6. Optional: Volunteer Work or Projects – Only if relevant

The Truth About Resume Templates

Templates aren’t inherently bad, but they can’t do the hard work for you. No template will fix weak content.

Start with the structure above, then focus your energy on the words – because that’s what actually gets you interviews.
