Most connection requests I get are lazy. Just clicking “Connect” with no message tells me you didn’t really think about why you want to connect.
Here’s how to do it properly.
Always send a note
LinkedIn gives you 300 characters. Use them. A personalised message increases your acceptance rate significantly.
Don’t lead with “I need a job”
I know you’re looking for work. But starting with that puts all the pressure on me. Instead, give me a reason to want to connect.
What to write instead:
Mention something specific. Maybe I posted something you found useful. Maybe you’re interested in the industry I recruit for. Maybe we have something in common.
For example: “Hi Sarah, I saw your post about interview preparation – really practical advice. I’m a project manager in construction looking to move into infrastructure. Would love to connect.”
Keep it short
You only have 300 characters anyway. Don’t try to tell your whole life story. Just explain who you are and why you’re reaching out.
After they accept:
Don’t immediately send a long message asking for a job. Start a conversation. Ask a question. Be a real person.
Building relationships takes time. The best opportunities come from genuine connections, not desperate requests.
