What Exactly Is A Tight Job Market?
I've said 'the market is tight' hundreds of times in my career. Recently I started wondering what it actually means.
To be honest, I’m not even sure what a “tight job market” actually means. I’ve probably said it hundreds of times throughout my recruitment career. Sometimes because it was true. But sometimes, if I’m being completely honest, because it’s simply something we say when someone is struggling to find a job.
“The market is tight at the moment.” It makes the situation sound a little easier to accept. But recently I’ve started thinking about this differently. Where does the idea of a “tight market” actually start?
We hear it everywhere. The news talks about unemployment, job vacancies and the economy. Social media is full of people talking about how difficult it is to find a job. Recruiters talk about fewer roles and more competition. Candidates hear all of this and naturally start thinking, “The market is tight.”
And maybe it is. The numbers might support it. There may genuinely be fewer vacancies, more competition and companies taking longer to hire. But somewhere along the way, “the market is tight” can become “there are no jobs.” And those two things are very different.
The market might be difficult for everyone. But your job search is still about finding one opportunity.
Imagine everyone starts talking about how bad Sydney traffic is. You hear it on the radio. Your colleagues talk about it. You see it everywhere. And maybe the traffic really is terrible. But you’re not trying to drive on every road in Sydney. You have one destination. You just need one route that gets you there.
I think the job market is similar. Yes, it might be difficult. Yes, there might be fewer opportunities. Yes, there might be more competition. But you’re not looking for every job in the market. You’re looking for one job.
So don’t let the phrase “tight job market” become the conclusion. Look at your own situation. Keep applying. Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep talking to people. The market will change. It always does. You don’t need the whole market to improve. You just need one opportunity to work out.
