Yield, Salary and the Danger of Stopping Too Early
If a property investor only asked about yield and stopped there, most Buyers Agents would say they're missing the full picture. Recruitment is no different.
Recently, I was speaking with a Buyers Agent who was not actively looking for a new role but was open to hearing what was happening in the market. One thing became obvious very quickly. Almost every conversation about a potential employer came back to one question: How much do they pay?
Now don’t get me wrong. Money matters. Just like yield matters when buying an investment property. But imagine if a property investor looked at a property and only asked: What is the yield? And once they got the answer, the conversation stopped there.
Most Buyers Agents would immediately explain there is more to a property than yield alone. Location. Growth potential. Tenant quality. Risk. Recruitment is no different. Salary matters. But it is not the full picture.
Who will I be reporting to? Why has this position become available? Is this a replacement role or a newly created role? What does success look like in the first 12 months? What opportunities could this role create in the future? Business stability. Culture. Flexibility. Future opportunities.
The second part of the conversation was even more interesting. Some employers were dismissed almost immediately because: “I haven’t heard good things about them.” When I asked where that information came from, the answer was: “A friend of a friend told me.”
A good Buyers Agent does not ignore concerns. But they also do not stop there. They engage with the facts. They challenge assumptions. They investigate further. And after all that, the client still has every right to say no. Recruitment is no different. Have the conversation. Meet the employer. Ask the questions. Then make a decision.
After 15 years in recruitment, I have seen candidates and employers not move forward, yet leave on good terms. Then a year or two later, circumstances changed and the conversation resumed. That opportunity would never have existed if the first conversation never happened.
