This question can feel awkward. It’s basically asking you to sell yourself, which doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
But it’s a common question, so you need a good answer ready.
What They’re Really Asking
They want to know:
- Do you understand what we need?
- Can you articulate your value?
- Are you confident in your abilities?
It’s your chance to summarise why you’re the right choice.
The Formula
Structure your answer:
- Reference what they need (show you listened)
- Connect it to what you offer (skills + experience)
- Add something that differentiates you
Keep it under 90 seconds.
Example Answer
“From our conversation, it sounds like you need someone who can hit the ground running on digital campaigns while also mentoring a junior team.
I’ve been doing exactly that for 5 years at [Company]. I’ve consistently delivered campaigns that exceeded ROI targets – most recently a 200% return on our biggest campaign. And I’ve trained three team members who’ve since been promoted.
What I’d add is that I’m also genuinely excited about [Company’s] approach to [specific thing]. It aligns with how I think marketing should be done.”
What NOT to Say
Don’t:
- “I really need this job”
- “I’ll work harder than anyone else”
- Generic statements with no proof
- Arrogant claims (“I’m the best”)
- “I don’t know, why should you?”
Tailor It
Your answer should change based on the role and company. What makes you right for THIS role at THIS company?
Use information from the job ad and interview to show you’ve been listening.
Practice
This question is almost guaranteed. Practice your answer until it’s smooth and confident, but not robotic.
Record yourself. Does it sound genuine? Confident? Specific?
